Themed Monthly Hikes

Led by Allison Middlemass, the Bent's Community Conservation Program Coordinator. Binoculars will be provided for folks without their own to borrow for the entirety of the hike. The hike is $15 per person and registration is required. On the morning of the hike, we will meet in the visitor parking lot at 9:30 am and the hike will go till 11:00 am.

Spring Migration  - 3/29

Spring migration marks the return of birds to their nesting grounds. Join us for a guided Spring migration bird hike where we will use binoculars to get a good view of birds, see the various habitats that our birds depend on, and discuss the ways scientists track birds to help protect them.

Tech-assisted Birding - 4/19, 7/19 and 11/8

Whether you are new to birding or a pro, technology can help you identify birds. Join this guided bird hike where we will use the app Merlin by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to help us identify and learn more about the birds at the Bent. Please download the app to your smartphone before the hike. You don't need to be tech-savvy, as we will walk through how to use the app.

History of the Bent - 5/10

The Bent of the River wasn't always an Audubon sanctuary and center. Join this guided hike to learn all about the Bent's incredible history. 

Tech-assisted Plant ID Walk - 6/21

Identifying plants can be difficult, but some apps can help. Join this guided hike where we will use the apps iNaturalist and Seek to learn more about the plants at the Bent. Please download the apps to your smartphone before the hike. You don't need to be tech-savvy, as we will walk through how to use the apps.

Fall Migration - 8/16

During Fall migration our migratory birds are heading south to their wintering grounds. Join us for a guided Fall migration bird hike where we will use binoculars to get a good view of birds, see the various habitats that our birds depend on, and discuss how scientists track birds to help protect them. 

Habitat Spotlight - 9/13

From forest to shrubland to meadows, the Bent has various important habitats for critical bird species. During this guided hike we will learn about the habitats we visit and how they support our birds.

Tree Tales - 10/11

Trees are characters within themselves, and they have stories to tell. During this guided hike we will learn about some fun facts and stories of the different tree species you can find at the Bent.

Habitat Management - 12/13

The Bent has a wide variety of habitats that bird species depend on. These habitats are managed to serve our native wildlife. On this guided hike, we will discuss how we can help keep our habitats healthy and functioning.
